INTRO TO FEDERATION:

1. "mastodon" is a piece of software that runs on a server. There's a lot of servers that run it & u can follow ppl on other servers.

2. When u follow someone from another server, your server receives their toots.

3. The federated TL is all public toots that the server receives, ie all of the toots from everyone that ppl on your server follow.

4. ERGO: if u want to see more toots in the fed TL, follow + get other ppl on your server to follow ppl from other servers!

Not gonna lie: one of my favourite things so far is that my federated timeline is basically bilingual french/english.

Actually, I think I'm going to make up my mind now that at some point in the future, things are going to change and I'm going to jump ship to a different instance. I mean, this is what being an early adopter is about.

The best bit about Mastodon is that people make probably the most long lasting choice of their entire usership when they first land and don't understand what an instance even is yet

I feel like at some point there's going to have to be a mechanism to migrate to a different instance. I chose this instance essentially at random because mastodon.social was full, but that doesn't mean this is actually the right one for me.

Should I migrate now before I've got too much invested here? What if this instance is removed forever? What if the rules change or the atmosphere becomes toxic? Starting over is as unappealing here as on Twitter.

@notwaldorf I AM TOOTING AT YOU YES GOOD

One of the neat things about being early to a social network is that it’s actually amusing to discover random people again. There’s little enough traffic that you can still see the signal in the noise.
